Advocacy, Knowledge & Capacity Building

Science, research and empirical evidence support the contention that successful businesses identify and capture value beyond short-term returns to their stakeholders. Long term commercial sustainability is being recast beyond financial returns to include attributing value to the impact a business has on systems external to its physical boundaries.

The degradation caused to the environment (through for example global warming attributed to greenhouse gas emissions, over-drawing on groundwater resources, disappearance of species of fauna and flora) and societal stress arising from a disproportionate distribution of wealth and access to livelihood opportunity has been attributed by science, research and observation to economic activities, incomplete measures of value and unsustainable corporate behaviours.

If corporate values omit to do so, consideration of an entity’s impact on environmental and societal ecosystems is being driven by regulation, expanding definitions of fiduciary duty, demonstrated best practice, customer expectation and value creation opportunities. Adopting a systems approach, accounting for interdependencies and interlinkages between environmental, societal and economic ecosystems, enables companies to understand their broader impact and identify where risks and opportunities for value accretion lie.  In so doing, a company is better positioned for success sustainable into the long term.

Cabot can assist in:

  • Identifying ways in which systems thinking deepens financial/operational and sustainability literacy to reinforce value
  • Working with asset owner, allocator and/or fund manager teams to identify high impact sustainability transitions beyond and in addition to those required by evolving and expanding regulation, compliance and expectation
  • Driving and navigating board and C-suite adoption of financial and sustainability lens
